Manganese in Iron & Steel Industry

Manganese is essential to iron and steel production by virtue of its sulfur-fixing, deoxidizing, and alloying properties. Steelmaking, including its ironmaking component, has accounted for most manganese demand, presently in the range of 85% to 90% of the total demand. Among a variety of other uses, manganese is a key component of low-cost stainless steel formulations and certain widely used aluminium alloys.[3]
The metal is very occasionally used in coins; the only United States coins to use manganese were the “wartime” nickel from 1942–1945, and, since 2000, dollar coins. The EU uses manganese in 1 and 2 Euro coins, due to greater and cheaper availability

What is Chromite?

Chromite is an iron chromium oxide mineral and the only ore of chromium metal. It is a mineral found in ultrabaisc rocks such as peridotite. It is also found in serpentines and other metamorphic rocks derived from the alteration of ultrabasic rocks. It is a high temperature mineral often found in the lower parts of magma bodies from the fractional crystallization process.

Uses of Chromium

In metallurgy, to impart corrosion resistance, create a shiny finish, or increase hardness:
- as an alloy constituent, such as in stainless steel
- in chrome plating
- chromic acid is used in some anodizing processes
As dyes and paints:
- Chromium(III) oxide is a metal polish known as green rouge.
- Chromium salts color glass an emerald green.
- Chromium is what makes a ruby red, and therefore is used in producing synthetic rubies.
- also makes a brilliant yellow for painting
- As a catalyst.
- Chromite is used to make molds for the firing of bricks.
- Chromium salts are used in the tanning of leather.
- Potassium dichromate is a chemical reagent, used in cleaning laboratory glassware and as a titrating agent. It is also used as a mordant (i.e., a fixing agent) for dyes in fabric.
- Chromium(IV) oxide (CrO2) is used to manufacture magnetic tape, where its higher coercivity than iron oxide tapes gives better performance.
- In well drilling muds as an anti-corrosive.
- In medicine, as a dietary supplement or slimming aid, usually as chromium(III) chloride, chromium(III) picolinate, chromium(III) polynicotinate or as an amino acid chelate, such as chromium(III) D-phenylalanine.[7]
- Chromium hexacarbonyl (Cr(CO)6) is used as a gasoline additive.
- Chromium boride (CrB) is used as a high-temperature electrical conductor.
- Chromium(III) sulfate (Cr2(SO4)3) is used as a green pigment in paints, in ceramic, varnishes and inks as well as in chrome plating.
- Chromium(VI) is used in the post Ballard preparation of Gravure (rotogravure) printing Forme Cylinders. By electroplating the metal onto the second coat of copper (after the Ballard skin), the longevity of the printing cylinder is increased.

China is likely to launch steel products futures trading this March on the Shanghai Futures Exchange, with linear steel and threaded steel to be the first futures varieties, according to an insider.
The introduction of steels futures will help enterprises prevent price risks through hedging and is helpful to restructuring of the domestic steel industry.
Also, it will help change China’s passive status in international iron ore negotiations. China may gradually gain some pricing power on the international steel market.
The source also said futures products of major building materials such as linear steel and threaded steel surely would come out earlier than rice futures.

Iron ore contract prices may fall as much as 50 percent this year amid a slowdown in China, the world’s biggest consumer of the raw material, according to Australia’s richest woman and mining magnate Gina Rinehart.
“We’re hearing 30 percent, 40 percent, 50 percent discounts to last year’s contract price,” Rinehart, who controls closely held Hancock Prospecting Pty, said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. That compares with the average forecast of a 30 percent cut in a Bloomberg survey of 11 analysts last week.
Chinese steelmakers are likely to win their first cut in contract prices in seven years as a global recession curbs demand for commodities. Rinehart’s partner, Rio Tinto Group, the world’s second-biggest exporter of the ore, and Baosteel Group Corp. began talks this month to set prices from April 1, according to two company executives who asked not to be identified.
“The economy in China is very sad right now,” Rinehart said. China’s economy may rebound soon and “ultimately, prices will rise,” she said. Hancock isn’t party to the talks.
Hancock Prospecting is partner with Rio in the Hope Downs iron ore project in Western Australia. Hancock is also seeking to develop the Roy Hill iron ore mine in Western Australia.
Rio, BHP Billiton Ltd., and Brazil’s Cia. Vale do Rio Doce, which handle three-quarters of traded iron ore, sell the steelmaking material under long-term contracts to China’s 20 biggest mills and traders at agreed annual prices.
China may be asking for a price cut of between 40 percent and 45 percent, Macquarie Group Ltd. analysts led by London-based Jim Lennon said in a Jan. 12 report. UBS AG analysts have forecast a decline of 40 percent. A 30 percent cut would still be the second- highest price on record.
